Led by Chief Winemaker John Kavanagh, our team strive to make each step of the winemaking process unique and individual.


Chief Winemaker

John moved to Martinborough specifically for Pinot Noir, and became the Chief Winemaker at Te Kairanga in 2012. A graduate of Lincoln University with a post graduate diploma in Viticulture and Oenology, John was born and raised in Waiuku, south of Auckland.

His philosophy is to honour the past while looking to the future; "While our land is steeped in history, our winemaking is very much focused on the future - to fully realise the potential of this incredible piece of land.”


Viticulturist/Vineyard Manager

A Marlborough local, born and raised in Blenheim, Dave joined the team at Te Kairanga as the viticulturist in 2013. He served similar roles at Escarpment, Craggy Range and Dog Point. Dave focuses on the seasonal variations within all of the vineyards in Martinborough from the exposed Ruatukopuna vineyard to the older vines on the Martinborough terrace. He works very closely with both John and Paul to ensure our great wines start in the vineyard.


Assistant Winemaker

Born and raised in Wellington, Pete attended Lincoln University where he became the first undergraduate to produce a medal winning wine from the University's vineyard. After completing vintages around New Zealand, he made wine in the Yarra Valley for five years before returning home and starting at Martinborough Vineyard. He has been Assistant Winemaker at Te Kairanga since 2017.


Cellar Hand

Holly grew up in Kumeu, Auckland and found her passion for wine not long after turning 18. Her love for Chardonnay quickly arose, with secret trips to Kumeu River. After an 18 month stint at Craggy Range winery in the Hawke’s Bay, her undying love of Pinot Noir and Riesling was discovered and Holly left for Martinborough to be in the thick of it. She hasn’t looked back since – she’s the vintage Cellar Hand that never left.
